5 Companies who sell RECYCLED PRODUCTS

Waste isn't a waste. It's the raw material for the next recycled products. Our daily waste including clothes, e-waste, plastics, and many more is not fully biodegradable and ends up being disposed of on the overflowing landfills. The 3 Rs of sustainability is conscientiously the only possible way to reduce those overflowing landfills from garbage and those are REDUCE, REUSE, and RECYCLE.

But how practical is all this effort, if thousands of bottles, newspapers, cloth pieces, e-waste articles are discarded every day, and only some are reused? There are many things you can do at home to do your bit for the environment, but should you need it, help is available outdoors as well. A variety of organizations have been launched in India itself, to help you reuse, reduce and recycle the products you use on an everyday basis.

Below, we list down such Indian startups and services which are taking one step close to a sustainable future.

 ECOKARI

Have you ever wondered what happens to the plastic wrappers or plastic wrappers of wafers are were utilized? They can be recycled to make other products and can be Reused to Reduce plastic waste. But in India, all these plastics are generally burnt to release some toxic and life-threatening gases or end up choking animals.

Pune-based EcoKaari has taken it upon itself to transform disposed of plastic waste into the handwoven fabric. Started last year by Nandan Bhat, this organization works with artisans who use the charkha and handloom to create this unique material which turns into fashion accessories, home décor, and office stationery.

EcoKaari works with four types of plastic waste: polythene bags (single-use plastic carry bags and grocery bags), multi-layered wrappers of cookies, chips, detergents, pulses, and flour, etc., gift wrappers, and old audio and video cassette tapes. Apart from these, it also accepts bread packets, bubble wrap, foam, transparent plastic, and plastic packets from online e-commerce portals such as Myntra, Amazon, and Flipkart.

 SHAYYA

‘Shayya’ is a bedroll for anyone who needs a mattress including First-Line Treatment Centres (FLTC), shelter homes, or homeless to use as beds. These bedrolls are created from the scrap that accumulates while making Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) that would otherwise be thrown out as garbage. And unlike regular mattresses used in FLTC, Shayya is very easy to disinfect. The PPE Shayya is lightweight at only 2.5-5kg.

Just like a mat in appearance, the ‘Shayya’ is suitable for one person to comfortably lie on. It is made by braiding the leftover pieces collected from tailoring units that produce PPE in Kerala. After making braids from the pieces by hand, these are joined together in a similar fashion of a cloth mat. 35 meters of such braids will be required to create one bedroll.

CodeEffortPvt.Ltd

Noida-based startup, Code, started in 2018 by friends Naman Gupta and Vipul gupta is recycling cigarette waste to produce products ranging from soft toys to manure.

Across the world about 4.5 trillion cigarettes are discarded each year with more than 100 billion cigarettes being dumped, on the streets and elsewhere, in India alone. While most of the cigarette disintegrates when burnt, what’s left behind are the cigarette butts.

These contain filters that are made of a plastic called cellulose acetate which takes years to degrade, and as they do, microplastics are released into the soil and oceans. A recent study found that one cigarette butt in a liter of water kills half the fish. On a mission to combat this pollution two friends from Noida, Naman Gupta, a Delhi University graduate, and Vishal Kanet, an engineer, founded Code, a company that recycles cigarette waste into different products.

Conclusion:-   Recycling can prevent the waste of potentially useful materials and can help in the reduced consumption of raw materials and also reducing the energy usage and pollution.  It helps in conserving natural resources. The increasing population in the world also increased the need for raw materials which results in overexploitation but recycling reduces the need for raw materials in every product by upcycling the old itself.
